The official said on July 3 that the death toll from a stampede at a religious festival in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras had risen to 121. According to the Office of the Relief Commissioner, 28 people were injured in incident dated July 2.
It stated that 19 of these deaths remain unidentified.
On July 3, an FIR was registered by the Uttar Pradesh Police against organizers of the religious congregation.
In a complaint lodged on behalf of U.P. police, it alleged that followers of Narayan Sakar Hari had thrown slippers and other articles of clothing belonging to victims into nearby fields with standing crops so as to obliterate evidence of a stampede.
U.P. police have registered a case against Event organizer Devprakash Mathur under BNS Section-105, 110, 126, 223 and 238. The person who remains missing is not named in this complaint.
This happened during a ‘satsang’ (prayer meeting) organized by self-styled godman Narayan Sakar Hari in Fulrai village under Sikandrarau police station area of Hathras district which witnessed an attendance exceeding one lakh mostly consisting women.
The official X handle of District Magistrate Hathras said in a post,” In view of the accident, the district administration has issued helplines 05722227041 and 05722227042 for public assistance.”
