Following discovery of elevated lead levels in several ground cinnamon products, federal health authorities are urging consumers to check their spice racks and cupboards.
This is according to CBS news which reported that the Food and Drug Administration has recommended for recall nine brands of ground cinnamon with lead concentrations between 2.03 and 7.01 ppm; a significant reduction from levels found in WanaBana cinnamon apple puree and applesauce products earlier recalled during fall last year.
FDA asks the public not to consume any of these listed ground cinnamon products, as ‘prolonged exposure may be unsafe and could contribute to elevated levels of lead in the blood.’
The FDA said long-term exposure can cause symptoms such as irreversible damage to the central nervous system leading to learning difficulties and developmental problems in children which short-term lead exposure might not cause. The agency added that chronic exposure among adults has been associated with kidney dysfunction, hypertension, as well neurocognitive effects.
Nevertheless, it is worth noting that apart from paints, water dust and soil have been key sources of contamination with lead but even items like candies, spices ceremonial powders etc. have also been found to contain this metal (CDC).
In a recent report by CDC they wrote that “Awarenss of other sources, such as spices adulterated with lead chromate,is important.”
Lead chromate or chrome yellow is an inorganic compound used as a pigment; while no longer employed for house paint, marine paints still utilize it along industrial paints even coloring plastics (American Chemical Society).

Meanwhile another recall of ALB Flavor bran cinnamon powder has been announced today by ALB-USA Enterprises of Bronx, NY because the product also had high levels of lead as FDA had warned about.
The FDA raised awareness on dangers related to continuous consumption of these products which pose a risk that can result in serious health conditions if not addressed promptly.
These contaminated products should not be continued to be consumed because it poses a danger to human life. Since long term exposure may result into serious health issues as highlighted by the FDA.
While immediate symptoms resulting from low-level lead exposure may not be evident though consequences could be long-standing prompting recalls actions meant to protect both children and adults alike (FDA).
Hence it is advisable for customers to follow all guidelines given during recalls just in case their spice racks show unsafe items; they should seek refunds if necessary.
