A security source on Wednesday said that a German military base located near Cologne Airport has been closed and thousands of soldiers were told not to drink tap water which is suspected to be an act of sabotage.
According to the source, this was a result of Spiegel magazine’s report asserting that someone may have forced entry into the facility thus leading to water contamination.
The source said that in spite of investigations about German forces’ probable sabotage, police, military police and military intelligence agency had urged people against consuming tap water just as a precautionary method.
This location at Cologne-Wahn is where Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his ministers travel by air using the fleet of aircrafts owned by the military on the basis.
“We cannot say much about it. However, our action is well justified,” said Berlin-based Territorial Command spokesperson in response to whether or not the base had been sealed off for some reasons. “We take this matter seriously.”
For any comments regarding this issue, there was no immediate response from the military intelligence agency. The cologne authorities could not comment either.
Moscow was previously warned by NATO over its hostile activities including cyber-attacks and acts of sabotage but at this stage it impossible to name who illegally gained access into Cologne base.
Last year in June, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg stated that there were signs which indicated a trend while recent attacks originated from more active Russian intelligence services.
Over these past months several countries such as Poland, Germany Britain and Czech Republic have all reported similar incidents.
