There is a gathering of people around the burnt remains of some shops that have been razed to the ground last week in Gandatwisa area, Dhalai district, Tripura after a tribal youth died during clashes with local residents on July 16, 2024.
The rights organization has served notices to DGP and Dhalai District Magistrate and sought information about actions taken against culprits involved in torching houses in Gandatwisa sometime this month. The Commission has given three weeks for filing a report by Director General of Police Amitabh Ranjan and Dhalai District Magistrate Saju Vaheed.
In Dhalai district twenty houses were set ablaze and looted by an angry mob on July 12th after a clash between rival groups resulted into death of a nineteen years old boy.
“Before launching into any detailed investigation or anything else, it would like the commission therefore request for the report from the office of the Director General of Police (DGP), Government of Tripura as to what action was taken up by the law enforcing agencies so far as such violent incident is concerned whether any criminal case has been registered, if so, under what penal sections and whether any offender has been arrested till date,” stated Justice S. C. Das in his notice while serving at TRHC Chairperson position.”
Meanwhile, The DM, respectively Civil Agency should probe into it in order to “know how they have made efforts to resettle them in their original condition before such incident”. “Inaction or negligence on the part(s) of public servant(s) leading to violation of human rights constitutes actionable wrong.” said Justice Das adding that further procedure would be conducted after submission of initial report within three weeks. The commission will deal with this issue on August 8.
