The food safety permit of a KFC outlet in Thoothukudi has been temporarily revoked due to the use of a synthetic additive.
On Thursday, a team led by District Food Safety Designated Officer Mariyappan and Area Food Safety Officer Kalimuthu inspected the restaurant in Velavan Hypermarket complex.
During the raid, it was discovered that magnesium silicate-synthetic was being used as an additive for purifying used cooking oil without any mention in stock register. The use of this artificial substance for cooking is forbidden.
Officials recovered 18 kg of magnesium silicate-synthetic and 45 litres of old cooking oil that had been purified using it. Additionally, they seized and destroyed 56 kg pre-prepared chicken that had not been utilized within 12 hours.
An order has been given to investigate further on this matter. According to the officials’ communique, food will be sampled, analysed and legal action will be instituted. Until such time when the order is withdrawn, no more business can occur in this outlet.
Pani puri shops also inspected
Following this step taken by officials, some pani-puri shops were inspected at various places in the city. No evidence was found regarding artificial colorants but three different types of foods were collected lastly which included three samples each from style foods as well as pani puri masala These two days are under testing condition; therefore appropriate legal action would be taken once having received report.
