JetBlue has been sued for $1.5 million by a passenger, Tahjana Lewis, who claims she suffered severe burns from a cup of “scalding hot” tea that was served during a turbulent flight. The incident occured on May 15th aboard Flight 2237 from Orlando, Florida to Hartford Connecticut.
According to Parami News’ report on June 24, the complaint said the passenger was given the tea while the “fasten seat belt” sign was on as a result of turbulence ongoing then hence described this decision as being “dangerous and hazardous.”
The lawsuit states that Lewis experienced severe burns and disfigurement to her upper chest, breasts, legs, left buttocks and right arm due to her proximity to the victim when it happened which resulted in disfigurement and scarring over all five areas affected by burns.
Edward Jazlowiecki calls JetBlue’s decision to serve alcohol during what he terms are meant for “serious” turbulence “gross negligence.” He alleged that no one among the crew asked whether there were any doctors onboard; they did not request an emergency landing or fly other airports. He also claimed that only limited assistance had been provided until after she disembarked.
“Very dangerous,” says counsel about serving drinks during serious turbulences on an aircraft (Jazlowiecki). Additionally, Jazlowiecki offers insight into Lewis’ condition saying: “…her burn injuries were so severe that she may need skin grafting…” (para8). She immediately went to the emergency room upon landing and saw dermatologist.
Among other things stated in the compliant include physical pain, partial disability of body parts like arms and legs and mental anguish. Likewise Jazlowiecki said it was terrible shock for her five-year old daughter who accompanied her at time.
