The local enforcement arrested a suspect following an “apparent assassination attempt” on former President Donald Trump at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday.
Trump was playing golf at the time when the incident took place. One of the members of the secret service noticed a rifle sticking out of a fence and opened fire. The agent fired four to six shots before the suspect fled. One Witness spotted and helped the authorities to track him down.
The suspect was identified as Ryan Wesely Routh, 58, Hawaii Hawaii-based man who claimed to be a strong supporter of Ukraine, and stated that he travelled to Kyiv to fight in the ongoing war against Russia.
The authorities found an AK47-style rifle with a scope, two backpacks with ceramic tile, and a GoPro camera in the bushes at the scene, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw during a news conference. Photos of the weapon and the backpack were displayed at the briefing.
The official said that the alleged shooter had mounted a GoPro on the fence and was “intent on filming” what would have been the murder of a former president, the New York Post reported.
His criticism of Trump’s move is visible through his social media posts.
In a post on X from April 22, he criticised Trump, saying, “Democracy is on the ballot, and we cannot afford to lose,” echoing a slogan frequently used by President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Routh also used his social media to call on President Biden, who was running for reelection at the time, to focus his campaign on protecting “America’s democracy and freedom.” He accused Donald Trump of trying to “enslave Americans under a master,” and warned, “We cannot afford to fail. The world is counting on us to show the way.”
