The Republican vice presidential nominee, JD Vance, has come under criticism after a viral video of him walking his German Shepherd dog Atlas. Instead of showing that he is just like everyone else, this film raises concerns about his ability to manage the dog.
In the clip, Vance was shown gripping the middle of Atlas’s leash rather than using the suggested loop around his wrist. Meanwhile, with only three fingers, Vance appears to be controlling Atlas who had an “EZ Walk” harness specifically designed for dogs pulling. Such experts contend that this approach may not work well when dealing with a large breed like Atlas and could prove dangerous.
Professional opinions
Vance’s technique however did not impress Eli Yudin who is a professional dog walker. Explaining why Yudin said that “Using only three fingers to hold the leash might not be sufficient if Atlas decides to pull or chase something.” He went on to say that “This could also lead to potential injury for Vance”. The trainer noted how well fitted were both the harness and leash but in reality it does not substitute proper handling.
Johnny Stoumbos another pro dog walking expert shared these thoughts too. He mentioned that “A knowledgeable dog owner would understand the importance of a secure grip and proper leash management especially with a large breed.” Additionally Stoumbos floated an idea that this video could have been politically motivated attempt aimed at making Atlas look as though he requires no supervision despite having exceptional manners.
Concerns about behaviour of Atlas
Also evident from this footage was how uncomfortable Atlas appeared according to some viewers who noted its tail was down along with ears positioned low. Yudin argues that this indicates probable unfamiliarity between Vance and the act of being walked by him. “But while body language can be deceiving, we can infer from ‘Atlas’ obvious discomfort that Vance isn’t actually his main handler,” commented Yudin.
Campaign implications
In July Vance joined Republican ticket where various assumptions about being unflappable have come up. The idea of including Atlas on campaign trail was to humanize Vance but through this video, it might have been the opposite. Instead of relating to his constituents, it has also left doubts regarding Vance’s handling of dogs and added more complexity in terms of reaching out to the electorate.
The video that intended to emphasize a personal moment has led to even more doubts regarding Vance’s suitability or whether he can effectively interact with his pet.
