It had been expected from former Vice President Dick Cheney, who has been a Republican for life, to cast his vote in favour of Kamala Harris in the 2024 elections, as his daughter Liz Cheney made it known yesterday. At the Texas Tribune Festival held in Austin, while on stage with Mark Leibovich of The Atlantic, the young Ms. Cheney made the surprise announcement, to loud cheers.
“Dick Cheney will be voting for Kamala Harris”, said Liz Cheney. She received a prompt “wow” from Leibovich.
It’s a very Republican endorsement to see Dick Cheney support Harris, also a clear removal of support from the Republican party and an assertion that puts him further in opposition to its erratic figure Donald trump. As formerly a conservative Republican chicane was, she has opposed Trump who has been polarizing in the Republican party after her daughter lost her election to the House. In a campaign ad for Liz Cheney during her bid for a fourth term in losing Wyoming to Harriet Hageman, trumps behavior was unacceptable; there are courts and processes if you want to turn into the leader who steals elections from his own people.
The advertisement, however, did not help convert voters in the strongly pro-Trump state as Liz Cheney lost her primaries two to one against Trump backed Harriet Hageman.
Due to Johnson’s deafness, he was not present at Friday’ police troops to receive Tom Dickson’s endorsements. Except he would later endorse Harris in a later statement. “He deserves never to be trusted with that authority,” Cheney said of Trump. “However strained it may be at times, it is every citizen’s responsibility to place the country above political affiliation in order to securely protect the Constitution of the United States. That is the reason why I am going to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.”
Dick Cheney has all his life been a Republican and having Democrats as friends has never voted for any Democrat presidential candidate. Cheney and his daughter supported Trump in the 2016 elections but later changed their mind when Trump made remarks about the drastic American presence in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars which were the hallmark of Cheney’s serve as George Bush’s vice president.
On the other hand, unless Liz Cheney still endorses that President Trump’s army remained unyielding. Asked for a response, Donald Trump’s mouthpiece Steven Cheung remarked: “Who the hell is Liz Cheney?” expressing his readiness, with your sarcasm, to name the former Presidentcheney as if he never had it.
Many Republicans have also turned away from Trump, including some tempered members of the party such as Sen. Mitt Romney and former Vice President Mike Pence, both of whom make it clear that they will not cast their votes for Trump in the next election although there is no indication of supporting Harris. Romney, who is retiring from the Senate, has also been one of the few within the GOP who still holds office and has viscerally criticized Trump.
Not far removed from the 2024 elections, the failure of the Dick Cheney clan to hold on to the mantle of the Republican Party points to the wider rifts in the party over Trump and his push factors, with several prominent names ‘crossing the floor’ early on before a nasty presidential race.
