BBC has voted ‘Tujhe Dekha’ – a song from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ’s) directed by Aditya Chopra, as its favorite Bollywood tune of the 90s in the United Kingdom.
DDLJ’s is hailed as an all-time blockbuster in Hindi cinema that generationalized Shah Ruk Khan and Kajol Devgan into India’s most beloved actors. DDLJ’s still holds the record of being the longest film ever shown in Indian history since it is still on show at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir Theatre till date.
Asian Network, a BBC radio station, recently asked its audience to select “The Ultimate 90s Bollywood Song” from fifty available options. The panel was comprised of Haroon Rashid and Nikita Kanda, Gagan Grewal and Nadia Ali -presenters at BBC Radio Asian Network- who were joined by industry insiders Amrita Tanna, Karan Pangali, Asim Burney for this purpose.
From Yeh Dillagi’s ‘Ole Ole’ to ballads like ‘Bahon Ke Darmiyan’ from Khamoshi: The Musical; however, the winner was unanimous for everyone; namely,’ Tujhe Dekha’ from the blockbusting movie produced in 1995.
As we know, DDLJ’s tells us about Raj played by Shah Rukh Khan and Simran played by Kajol. They are both Indians living in London who happen to meet each other and fall in love against Simran’s family will.
This must have been strange to see mustard fields which are covered up with straggling yellow plantations. With great nostalgia that accompanies it even after years through films made afterwards this scene is therefore referred to being an integral part of Indian pop culture during those days
With vocals delivered by Kumar Sanu and Lata Mangeshkar this song just would not go away from the playlists of all these streaming services.
