Amity: congress amisee candidate Kishori Lal Sharma on Friday said he would rather fight Gandhi on the seat but he cannot refuse the party’s order asking him to contest the elections. Sharma, a close aide of the Gandhi family, has been fielded by the Congress party from the Amiti Lok Sabha seat, a long-standing bastion of the Gandhi family that was breached in 2019.
“Even today, I want the Gandhi family to contest the elections from Amisi. But I think it is my duty to take orders from the family,” Sharma told PTI at the Congress office in Gauriganj.
“I have always been a ‘service’ to the Gandhi family and whatever responsibility the Gandhi family has given to its service, I will fulfill it,” he said.
After days of suspense, the Congress on Friday selected Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi’s deputy Sharma, and before them Rajiv Gandhi of Amethi, as candidates for the seat.
Sharma is scheduled to visit the collection office later in the day and submit nomination papers to district election officer Nisha Anant.
The BJP elected sitting MP and Union Minister Smriti Irani, who ended Rahul Gandhi’s three-term re-election in 2019. Lok Sabha electiondefeating him by more than 55,000 votes.
