Ending weeks of suspense, the Congress party on Friday announced that Rahul Gandhi will contest against Rai Bareilly in the Lok Sabha elections, while Kishori Lal Sharma, a close aide of the Gandhi family, will Compete in Amici.

Congress on Monday appointed former chief ministers Bhupesh Baghel and Ashok Gehlot as senior observers of the AICC for Rae Bareli and Amethi assembly constituencies respectively.

Priyanka Gandhi has taken over the campaign and will be stationed in Raebareli and Amethi from Monday till the end of polls. Sources said Priyanka Gandhi will hold hundreds of ‘nukad sabhas’ meetings and door-to-door campaigning.

“The center will be set up at Rae Bareli and she will be stationed at a hotel there. From booth management to outreach, everything will be handled by her. Sources said a process has been started to provide services to the freedom fighter’s family and those who have been with the Gandhi family for decades. Kinship people conduct outreach.

She will also oversee digital and social media activities in both constituencies, they said. They said campaigns would be carried out at all levels of the organization to reach everyone in both constituencies.

Priyanka Gandhi will also take charge of Congress president Malikajun Haq, former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel and former deputy chief minister of Rajasthan Sachin Pillow Planning and arrangement of key senior leadership campaigns. Sources said she will cover around 250-300 villages and provide equal time to both the constituencies.

The strong foundation laid by Feroze Gandhi in Rae Bareli was later nurtured and strengthened by his wife and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who in 1967, Winning seats in 1971 and 1980, friends and members of the Gandhi family followed suit. In Amish, a non-Gandhi family member is contesting again after 25 years against sitting BJP MP Smriti Irani.

In 2019, Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi in the Amethi election by over 55,000 votes, while in the Raebareli election, Sonia Gandhi defeated the BJP’s Dinesh Pura by over 167,000 votes. Tapu Singh. Rahul Gandhi will face Singh, who has been fielded again by the BJP.

Sharma is the key figure in looking after these two prestigious constituencies and is the face of the Gandhian faction in two key seats. Amethi and Rae Bareli seats will go to polls on May 20 in the fifth round of the seven-phase general election.
