In a tough message, China on Thursday warned against those advocating independence for Taiwan as the country encircled Taiwan with naval vessels and military aircraft in war games with a vow that blood of “independence forces” will flow from the self-ruled island.

Following Lai Ching-te’s inauguration as Taiwan’s new president, maneuvers criticized by China as an “admission of independence.”

“Taiwan independence forces will be left with their heads broken and blood flowing after colliding against the great…undertaking of China achieving complete unification,” according to foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin, who emphasized the gravity of the situation.

In response to what it considers separatist acts following Taiwan’s recent President Lai Ching-te’s rejection of Beijing sovereignty claim, Chinese military has begun extensive two-day ‘punishment drills’ surrounding Taiwan involving its various branches.

State-run Xinhua news agency reported that they started at 7.45 am on Thursday.

Taiwan for its part has deployed its air, ground and sea forces to reaffirm her commitment to defending freedom and sovereignty. China’s actions were condemned as provocative by Presidential spokeswoman from Taiwan who also reiterated its determination to resist coercion.

The exercise named “Joint Sword-2024A” is being conducted in strategic locations around Taiwan including the north, south and east areas of the island that are bordered by the Strait of Taiwan.

China sees Taiwan as a renegade province which must be brought back under mainland rule even if it means using force

Li Xi, spokesperson for PLA Eastern Theatre Command responsible for the Strait of Taiwan said this is both a punishment for separatist activities by “Taiwan Independence” forces and a strong warning against external interference or provocation

These exercises are spread across different sites inclusive of The Taipei Straits; north, south and east corners of Taiwan Island; also surrounding islands such as Kinmen, Matsu Wuqiu Dongyin among others. Such moves indicate China’s determination to maintain its territorial integrity as well as the it’s sovereignty over Taiwan.
