Recently, The Southern Railway has now changed its plan of making Perambur railway station as the fourth terminal of Chennai to the Villivakkam station that had been previously announced. Following this announcement, The Southern Railway which had been said to make Tambaram as the third railway terminal started on Wednesday remodeling the yard.
A senior official in the Southern Railway said that it was confirmed by R.N. Singh, General Manager, Southern Railways at his press meet held on Wednesday July 25, 2024 at Railway Budget presented by Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw through video conferencing held at Head Quarters in Chennai that “Fourth Terminal has been shifted away from Villivakkam to Perambur” Space was cited as reason for shifting from Villivakkam to Perambur as the fourth railway terminal. He said: “In Perambur railway station enough space is available for construction of Fourth Terminal with regard to railways and soon land survey would start being implemented for initiating this project.”
The RLDA has also prepared Detailed Project Report (DPR) for redevelopment of Tambaram Railway station which will be submitted within a period of ten days to Railway Ministry who intends to execute it under Public Private Partnership (PPP), said the railway official. From when work begins with a contractor till completion phase is over and handed over back to Indian railways, entire work will be done within three years’ time duration. This remodelling work which is taking place in Tambaram Yard will help increase train capacity and ease passenger congestion.

By June next year, we shall finish up with the Kilambakkam station job funded by State Government so as road-service link may reach till Bus terminus facility according to another railway official.
