Several parts of Chennai had thunderstorms yesterday evening, following a hot day on Monday June 17, 2024. However, the rains that fell overnight caused flooding in some portions of the city yet offering relief to residents from intense heat.
Although it rained in many places within Tamil Nadu including Madurai, Nilgiris, Krishnagiri and Tiruchi, the belt encompassing Chennai-Kancheepuram-Tiruvallur experienced heavy showers.
Sholinganallur got 12 cm of rainfall during the 24 hours until eight thirty AM Tuesday morning according to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai. The aforementioned weather station has recorded rain at a rate of upto 11 cm from current however many other such stations including Chembarambakkam, Pallikaranai and Alandur situated in the South received more than 7cm.
Meenambakkam has already received almost twenty point seven centimeters for this month only as last night’s rains were at least seven centimeters deep since June began. This is over four times its average for June which is usually about four point six centimeters.
Continued wet weather
The meteorological department expects that wet weather will continue across state through to June 23rd courtesy of weather systems and convective activity.
There may be spells of light to moderate intensity thundershowers over North Tamil Nadu and parts of Chennai belt during Tuesday (June 18) evening or late night hours maybe likely.
Some pockets of T.N. and Puducherry may experience a hot day on June 18, with the mercury level climbing a few notches above normal levels.
In its nowcast valid till Tuesday afternoon, thunderstorms are forecasted by the department which will affect Theni district along with Kanniyakumari and Tenkasi districts.
