A Chandigarh court issued notices to Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut and others connected to the film ‘Emergency’ in regards to a legal case. These notices were issued in relation to the complaint which states that the film, which has been helmed by Ranaut herself, is anti Sikh and depicts a former Jathedar of the Akal Takth as a ‘Terrorist’.
The complainant Advocate Ravinder Singh Bassi is president of the NGO Lawyers for Humanity and has been punched for his allegations that the flick in questions bastards Sikh history.
Details of the Petition
In the plea, Bassi maintained that the way former Jathedar has been shown in Emergency trailer is absolutely wrong. He said, “The accused, without studying appropriate historical facts, had negatively depicted Sikhs and made allegations that the then sitting Jathedar Sri Akal Takth Sahib was demanding for a separate state. Such representations are totally baseless but are meant to defame the Sikhs and the akal takth jathedars.”
Bassi also emphasized that this such portrayal shall be like “a knife piercing the feeling and sentiments of a Sikh and to that of the deponent”. It is claimed that Ranaut has made an attempt to create provocative information in a bid to instigate both the communities.
Legal Action Against Kangana Ranaut
The aggrieved is seeking the registration of an FIR against actress Ranaut and two other respondents in the petition under different clauses of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. This mainly includes promoting animosity between peoples of the same country in relation to religion and propagating untruths detrimental to the nation’s integrity. The court stated that ‘Kangana Ranaut and other respondents shall file their replies on or before 5th December, 2024.’
The complaint has also laid an accusation against the actress Ranaut, the producer and director of the film, for usually courting unnecessary attention. ‘The actress, the producer, and the director of Emergency have caused rifts among the communities by making incendiary comments or speeches against the minorities too many times,’ Bassi said.
The court will now wait for the respondents, including Ms. Kangana Ranaut, to reply to its interim order, before proceeding with further hearings on the case.
