The approval to rename Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) as Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) was given by RoC, the Registrar of Companies in the Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
On June 27, the TNPDCL, a distribution utility of the State, made its decision according to a recent circular from The Registrar.
There are about 3.37 crore consumers belonging to different categories. No less than 8.11 lakh new service connections have been established during 2023-24.
In January, TANGEDCO has split into two businesses for generation activities: Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Limited (TNPGCL) that will handle fossil fuel related (coal, naptha and gas) production and Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) which will be responsible for hydro, wind and solar generation .
TEDA was merged with TNGECL; whereas TNPGCL was incorporated on February 9 and later TNGECL followed on February 10.
The restructuring of TANGEDCO was done considering “vast scale” of distribution operations and trend of having separate distribution companies in other major States. Furthermore, in line with Policy Note for 2024-25 issued by State Energy Department, there has been an establishment of a dedicated green energy company to give an impetus to renewable energy sources.
