Police on Saturday arrested a 41-year-old “police informer” who was running an app-based horserace betting racket via ten mobile applications.
At Cresent Road in Madhavanagar, Virendra Kumar Bhandari was caught red-handed by Inspector G.T. Shrinivas’ team after receiving a tip-off. During the investigation, it was found that the accused collected bets for a race held in Ooty from gamblers through an app. Searching his mobile phone, detectives found 10 similar bookie apps he used for various gambling activities like playing cricket and horse racing.
The cops claimed that he posed as a “police informer” but he was operating this business as well as maintaining contact with law enforcement agencies offering them information relating to illegal and antisocial behaviors.
The police confiscated ₹55,800 cash from him and have registered a case against him under the Karnataka Police Act for further enquiry.
Meanwhile, on the same day High Grounds police raided and apprehended two punters while bookies escaped. The police took away ₹2,500 from each of those who were nabbed.
