A Border Security Force official reported that an alarm was raised along the 4096 km border with India following political developments in Bangladesh.
The Director General-BSF Daljit Singh Chawdhary went to Kolkata on August 5 to assess the situation.
On the five states’ eastern side, the BSF guards the Indian front.
Apart from West Bengal, there are Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Assam (262 km) and Mizoram (318 km) which have a combined length of border with Bangladesh of 2,217 kilometres.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has yielded to pressure from protesters and resigned on August 5, 2024. Media reports say she is now in India where she had sought refuge as a result of previous military coup attempts against her government.
But this time it wasn’t a coup; demonstrators stormed into Dhaka – based PM’s official residence after learning that their leader was leaving the country for good.
Even though the authorities completely cut off internet services nationwide in order to contain it, students who are demonstrating against government plans regarding quotas under ‘Students Against Discrimination’, began their peaceful ‘Long March to Dhaka’.
Since July when protests started, they have led to at least three hundred casualties and ninety four deaths just yesterday during fierce clashes.
