Brussels Airlines on Friday said that it would cancel the majority of its flights scheduled for October 1 due to a nationwide strike by security personnel in Belgium. The airline, based at Brussels Airport, is one of the key hub carriers within the Lufthansa Group.
The country’s primary airport, Brussels Airport, had requested airlines to assess their flight schedules in anticipation of reduced security screenings as a result of the strike.
According to a Brussels Airlines spokesperson, the airline will have to cancel 80% of its 203 scheduled flights for the day. Affected passengers will be provided with alternative flight options, including the possibility to travel on an earlier or later date, or to fly on the same day via another Lufthansa Group hub.
The airport authorities predicted that a large number of security staff would take part in the strike, causing a substantial disruption to airport operations on that day. In the previous month, Brussels Airport handled approximately 2.4 million passengers and 18,600 flights, as per the airport’s data.
The upcoming strike in October follows closely on the heels of recent disruptions at Belgium’s Charleroi airport, a significant hub for the low-cost carrier Ryanair, where multiple days of strikes by airport employees caused considerable flight delays and cancellations.
