Joe Biden has announced the end of his 2024 campaign for the US presidency and expressed support for vice president Kamala Harris in a move that attracted international media attention.
“My fellow Democrats, I have made up my mind not to take this nomination and instead concentrate all my energy on holding onto the Office of President until the end of my term. My first decision when the party nominated me in 2020 was to make Kamala Harris my Vice President. And it’s been the smartest thing I’ve ever done. Today, I’d like to fully endorse Kamala as our nominee this year. This is an appeal to Democrats — let us gather our strength to overturn Trump’s rule. Let’s do it,” posted Biden on X.
Some newspapers used plain “Biden quits race” as their heading but others chose “Biden bows out” or even “bowed to the inevitable”.
The Parami News played with US president’s name with its headline — “Bye, Done: Biden Drops Out Of Race, Endorses Kamala”
“Biden exits race” was The Washington Post’s choice followed by “After miscues and revivals, history opens a door” which discussed Kamala Harris.
The Guardian featured “Biden’s exit from the race,” with remarkable choice called an act that sends “the nation into disarray few months before election.” It said it came after weeks when Democratic leaders have been pressurizing him including organizers and financiers.
While Financial Times ran a headline saying “Biden pulls out White House race and backs Harris as successor”, “another article noted that her being back by Joe has put her in an uncharted territory.”
Daily Express had a huge picture of US president looking sad alongside headlines such as “Biden quits” because he gave in “to pressure after disastrous debate.”
Metro went with “sad end” titled — Biden bows out
New York post reported how political analyst Van Jones broke down on air while discussing Biden dropping out of the race in an article titled — “Liberal media goes into meltdown mode after Biden drops out: Van Jones cries on air, Jen Psaki struggles for words”.
“He has fought, and fought, and we’re all so pisse off. And then you win the car keys back. And then you just cry,” explained Jones.
