Bharatiya Janta Party and Congress had cross words over a statement by Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, which said that “violence and hatred are frequently seen among the people who claim to be Hindus”.
The state unit of BJP responded by organizing a rally on Tuesday afternoon in protest against the sentiment expressed by the Congress leader concerning Hindus as being violent.
In Mahatma Gandhi Marg where various affected groups often demonstrate seeking attention from State administration for their grievances, the BJP workers stumbled upon each other with another group. The building is also home to Congress Bhawan, which serves as Punjab’s State office of that political party.
According to them, this happened when members of BJP threw cow dung at a life size image of Mr. Gandhi that had been placed right in front of Congress Bhawan.
Meanwhile youth wing members said that this demonstration was meant to protest against ‘very distasteful’ remarks made by Mr. Gandhi in Lok Sabha but suddenly Congress leaders turned violent during peaceful demonstration.
They did beat up BJP supporters. Two BJP leaders were injured and admitted into hospital while others scampered for safety thereafter. In the evening congress supporters washed down the banner with milk and water.
