Barbara Kingsolver, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of one of the most cult novels ‘The Bean Trees,’ is in line for yet another such award. The People news report has it that on Friday, September 5, the National Book Foundation proclaimed that Kingsolver is the recipient of its 2024 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters Press.
This lifetime achievement honor will be formally bestowed on her at the 75th National Book Awards ceremony which is to take place on 20th November in the city of New York, USA.
Barbara Kingsolver, aged 68, will be recognized for her many years of influential writing in fiction and nonfiction, journalism and poetry with a special emphasis on the science genre. “The words and deeds of Barbara Kingsolver, whether active as a writer or as a person, moved generations of writers and readers alike,” this is how David Steinberger, chairman of the National Book Foundation Board of Directors, characterized her in the press.
She has created fictional works such as The Bean Trees and Unsheltered, as well as the edited collection Holding the Line: Women in the Great Arizona Mine Strike. Her novel about a boy growing up in foster care in the Middle America of a drug-dealing society, Demon Copperhead won her the prestigious Pulitzer Prize 2023.
When reflecting on the decision that has been made, Kingsolver believes, ‘It feels amazing, and gratifying to be so recognized and honored among one’s colleagues so.’
