A Bangladeshi student attendant of NIT Silchar, Assam has been sent back to her home country following her use of “love emoji” in a Facebook anti-India post, police say Tuesday (August 27) reports.
The Senior Superintendent of Police for the district of Cachar Numal Mahatta alleged that such action is “not deportation” but she was rather returned in consultation with the Bangladeshi authorities.
The SP said Maisha Mahajabin is a fourth semester Electronics and Communication Department student of NIT Silchar. She was returned to Bangladesh on Monday via the Integrated Check Post ICP at Sutarkandi located in Karimganj district.
“This is not a case of deportation…UZer touchy topic made her react this way. It was in the love symbol application where this post was made by some senior Alfi Sahadat Hussain NIT Silchar alumnus who has left India about six months after completing his course. He now is settled in Bangladesh,” PTI was told by Ms. Mahatta.
The SP asserted that many other people were angry at being forced to witness such a post, where she had used an emoji with ‘love’ as a reaction.
Mahajabin however maintained that she has no wish to pursue her studies further, stating that she made a request to the NIT Silchar authorities to let her go back to her country.
When asked if she will complete her course sometime in the future, the SP responded: “She has not yet finished her course. Whether she will be back again to complete her study, nothing can be said about it now.” As per the understanding between Indian and Bangladeshi governments, there are presently 70 Bangladeshi students studying at NIT Silchar.
Mahatta claimed that of those, approximately 40 NIT Silchar students are Hindus of Bangladeshi origin.
“I have met the students. I have told them not to do any wrong work or take part in any activity which is against India,” he said.
In the same vein, Hindu Rakkhi Dal Spokesperson Suvasish Choudhury told PTI that these people saw the former student’s anti-India post and alerted the police to take action.
“We sent some anti India material, including Facebook messages posted by people from Rajshahi University, Bangladesh. She (Mahajabin) posted to one such thread with a love emblem,” he stated.
