Border Security Force personnel keep watch along the International Boundary of Indo-Bangladesh.
The Border Security Force (BSF) has been put on high alert at the Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam following the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh. The Integrated Check Post (ICP) has remained closed since Monday (August 5, 2024), and it is not only for import-export but also people’s movement is stopped.
“High alertness is our concern; no violent act should be allowed to happen. We are on high alert with the BSF camped alongside us. They have come with an Army company for additional security… There are no Indian students or citizens since last week,” Mr. Yadav confirmed to Parami News.
In Assam, four districts namely Cachar, Karimganj, Dhubri and South Salmara share their borders with Bangladesh. Meanwhile, Ministry of Home Affairs has formed a committee under ADG, Eastern Command, BSF to monitor the situation at Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB).
Chairman of the five members Committee is Additional Director General of BSF, Eastern Command. “A Committee shall be constituted comprising of a) ADG, BSF Eastern Command as Chairman b) IG BSF Frontier HQ South Bengal c) IG BSF Frontier HQ Tripura d) Member(Planning and Development), LPAI e. Secretary LPAI” stated an office memorandum dated August 9 by Under Secretary to Government of India Smitha Viju.
“The above committee would maintain liaisoning channels with its counterpart authorities in Bangladesh so as to secure safety of Indian nationals and minority communities residing there,” stated the office memorandum further adding that Bangladesh was going through a fluid political situation which saw Sheikh Hasina resigning from her position as Prime Minister on August 5 amidst mounting protests.
Demanding reformation in quota system reserving civil service jobs for various groups including descendants’ of 1971 war veterans, protests started in early July. This further intensified when the students objected a new provision for government jobs to be given on preference to descendants of freedom fighters culminating in violence including attacks on state television headquarters and police booths in Dhaka.
