A survey by election watchdog Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has shown that 93% of the winners in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were crorepatis compared to 88% in 2019.
The top three richest candidates are: Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur constituency TDP Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani with assets worth ₹5,705 crore; Telangana’s Chevella BJP Konda Vishweshwar Reddy with total assets amounting to ₹4,568 crore and Haryana’s Kurukshetra BJP Naveen Jindal whose assets are valued at ₹1,241 crore.
In its analysis of 543 winning candidates it found that four thousand fifty four persons were crorepatis
475 (88%) winning candidates were crorepatis in 2019 while as many as about 443 (82%) winners in the last general elections held in five years ago were crorepatis.
This figure has been gradually increasing since 2009 when only three hundred fifteen (58%) MPs had over one crore rupees worth of property and assets.
According to the analysis done, there are 227 (95%) BJP’s out of their total winning candidate. Who have won and declared more than one crore rupees asset out these 240. Congress having ninety two out of its ninety nine (93%), DMK twenty one out twenty two (95%). TMC twenty seven out twenty nine (93%) and Samajwadi party thirtyfour out thirty seven (92%).
All three successful AAP contenders, twelve JDU members, and sixteen representatives from TDP were all millionaires according to ADR data.
The analysis also looks at the chances of candidates with different financial backgrounds winning the elections.
According to this, 19.6% were a probability of a being a Swaroop at least one crore rupee candidate to win in 2024 LS polls as compared to only 0.7% that could be possible for those with less than a crore rupee assets.
The analysis also contains a breakdown of wealth distribution among the winners.
42% of the candidates have assets worth more than ₹10 crore in total.
While 19 percent held assets between ₹5 and 10 crore, about 32 percent had asset values ranging from ₹1-5 crores.
Winners having an amount less than twenty lakh rupees are hardly even one percent.
Large variations emerge when comparing average assets per winner among major parties.
TDP has an average of₹442.26 crore per winner, followed by BJP – ₹50.04 crore. DMK – ₹31.22 crore, Congress – ₹22.93 crore, TMC – ₹17.98crore and SP with ₹15.24crore on average per winer.
The ADR Analysis also shows discrepancies in financial profiles of winning candidates. Some have huge properties while others are almost insignificant in terms of wealth creation
For example, BJP’s Jyotirmay Singh Mahato from West Bengal’s Purulia has declared asset value totaling just five hundred thousand Indian Rupees only or $5000 USD approximately. Similarly, TMC’s Mitali Bag from West Bengal’s Arambag holds an asset worth seven hundred thousand Ruppes only or $7000 approximately.
SP’s Machhlishahr candidate Priya Saroj is estimate at nearly eleven lakhs Rupees only ($11k).
Moreover, it did identify those who owed most money as liabilities.
Number one on that list is TDP’s Pemmasani with more than ten billion and thirty eight million rupees in debt. From Tamil Nadu’s Arakkonam constituency, DMK’s S. Jagathratchakan has liabilities amounting to six hundred forty nine crore rupees while TDP’s Prabhakar Reddy Vemireddy from Nellore (AP) incurs the sum of one hundred ninety seven crore Rupees’ liability.
