At least 19 people killed and 17 others were injured after a devastating explosion rocked a coal mine in Tabas, located in the eastern region of Iran, according to reports from Iranian state television on Sunday. The explosion occurred after a methane leak in the mine, approximately 540 kilometres (335 miles) southeast of Tehran, the nation’s capital.
In response to the blast, which took place late Saturday, authorities have dispatched emergency personnel to the affected area.At the time of the explosion, around 70 individuals were present and working in the mine.
Despite being known for its oil production, Iran also boasts a wealth of various minerals. The country consumes approximately 3.5 million tons of coal annually, but its domestic mines only produce about 1.8 million tons per year. The remaining coal is sourced through imports and is frequently utilized in Iran’s steel mills.
Unfortunately, this is not the first tragedy to strike Iran’s mining industry. In 2013, two separate mining incidents claimed the lives of 11 workers. In 2009, 20 workers lost their lives in several incidents, and in 2017, a coal mine explosion resulted in the death of at least 42 people.
The high number of fatalities in Iran’s mining sector is often attributed to inadequate safety standards and insufficient emergency services in the mining areas.
