On Monday, officials reported that over the weekend a severe landslide at an unauthorized gold mine in Sulawesi Island, Indonesia led to 12 deaths and left 18 others missing.
Head of the local rescue agency Heriyanto said on Sunday morning that the landslide took place in Sumawa district of Gorontalo province where miners and residents near the site were killed. However, five survivors have been found whereas efforts are still underway to find 18 more missing persons.
“We have already dispatched a search and rescue team comprising of 164 personnel, which includes national rescue teams, police as well as military,” said Heriyanto. Nonetheless, according to Reuters report most rescuers face a difficult journey covering 20 kilometers towards the site due to heavy mud which is not relenting despite ongoing rainfall in the area.
“Once conditions allow it we will strive to apply excavators”, he added.

BNPB has warned residents of Gorontalo province about continuous rain forecasted between Monday and Tuesday urging them to be more cautious so as not experience any further calamities.
