On 1st July, 2024, deer cross the National Highway near the flood-hit Kaziranga National Park in Nagaon district.
As of July 4th, seventeen animals have drowned and another seventy two were saved from flooding at the renowned Kaziranga National Park, a source disclosed.
Eleven hog deer drowned in the park while five died during treatment
They included sixty three hog deer and two otter among others like sambar and scop owl with one rhino calf, Indian hare and jungle cat each that forest officials rescued.
The official added that currently there are twenty six animals undergoing treatment while twenty nine have been treated and released into their habitats.
By July 3rd eleven animals had died due to drowning while sixty five others were rescued from flood waters in the Kaziranga National Park.
Effects of Flooding on Eastern Assam Wildlife Division
The official revealed that out of a total number of two hundred thirty three camps in Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, only fifteen remain dry as against one hundred fifty eight on July 3rd.
21 out of Agoratoli range’s 34 camps are submerged under water whereas this figure is shared by Central; there are 38 out of its former number fifty eight camps submerged under water, West or Bagori; there are 33 out of its former number forty nine camps submerged under water, Burapahar; there are ten out of its former number twenty five camps submerged under water, Bokakhat; there are 3 out of its former number nine camps which are fully underwater
So far Forest Department personnel has already vacated nine camps which include two each from Agoratoli range and central range, three from Bokakhat, one each from Biswanath and Nagaon wildlife divisions.
To protect plants and animals within national parks staff members belong to different departments including security guard who live insides parks for patrolling purposes.
At the moment, there is a ban on movement of vehicles along NH-37 (New NH-715) under section 163 of BNSS with a speed limit of 20 to 40 km/hour.
