Actor Aamir Khan, whose film Lagaan remains the last Indian movie to secure a nomination in the Oscars’ Best International Feature category, recently shared his thoughts on why Indian films often struggle to generate attention at the Academy Awards. Speaking during the promotion of Laapataa Ladies, India’s official submission for the Oscars this year, Aamir voiced his disagreement with fellow actor Shah Rukh Khan’s perspective on the subject.

Shah Rukh Khan’s View on Indian Films at Oscars

In an earlier interview, Shah Rukh Khan attributed the lack of Indian films at the Oscars to their format, saying, “We have to change the format of our films. If I’m invited to your party, I need to dress up in the code you tell me to. I cannot be wearing my code of two and a half hours and five songs.” Shah Rukh also pointed out that Lagaan succeeded because it was a blend of art and commercial cinema, describing it as a “wonderfully made film.”

Aamir Khan’s Response

Aamir Khan respectfully disagreed with Shah Rukh’s assessment. “No, I don’t agree. I don’t agree. Because Lagaan was three hours and 42 minutes. And it had six songs. And it got nominated,” he explained in an interview with BBC Asian Network.

According to Aamir, the quality of storytelling and the emotional impact of a film are what matter most. “To get nominated, the members really have to love your film. Lagaan proves that a film with songs, which is also very long, is not a problem for the Academy members. It depends on how good your work is and how you’re able to touch hearts,” he added.

The Challenges of Securing an Oscar Nomination

Aamir explained the complexity of securing a nomination in the Best International Feature category. “People forget that this is the toughest category at the Oscars. You’re competing with the best film from each country. In India alone, we make 1000 films a year. To be selected from India, you have to first beat 1000 films. And then you’re in an arena where there are 80 other films. To be nominated among 80 films is itself tough,” he explained.

Indian Films and the Oscars: A Mixed Journey

So far, only three Indian films—Mother India, Salaam Bombay, and Lagaan—have been nominated in the Best International Feature category. However, recent years have seen a surge in international recognition for Indian cinema. RRR won the Best Original Song category, and The Elephant Whisperers triumphed in Best Documentary Short.

Aamir remains hopeful about India’s chances this year with Laapataa Ladies, directed by his ex-wife Kiran Rao and produced by him. The film’s selection and promotion continue the country’s ongoing efforts to make a mark at the prestigious awards.
