33 FIRs have been lodged against the drivers who went beyond 130 kmph on State Highways since August 1st by the police.
Section 281 of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita was invoked against the errant drivers for acting in a rash and negligent manner endangering human lives. It provides for a prison term of six months, a fine of ₹1000, or both.
In his statement dated July 31, Alok Kumar, Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety, Karnataka had stated that starting from August 1st, FIRs would be filed against those who were found to be over speeding at more than 130 kmph. They used to pay fines only.
This came after on NICE Road an accident had occured as three people died due to a vehicle which was moving at the speed of 160 kmph. Consequently, during a special drive carried out on Bengaluru – Mysuru Highway on July 25th, 155 drivers were apprehended for over speeding above 130 kmph.
However presently anyone caught over speeding beyond what road allowed would be fined but those exceeding 130 kmph would be charged with criminal case
