CHENNAI: Two adult Rottweilers, off leash and aggressive, attacked a five-year-old girl at a park in Chennai’s Thousand Lights on Sunday. Her mother tried to rescue the child and was also bitten. Locals claim the dogs have a history of attacking animals and people.
Suraksha R, the daughter of park warden Ragu, is in the intensive care unit with severe injuries to her scalp, back and arms and is scheduled to undergo plastic surgery on Thursday. Also being treated for scrapes and bruises.

“When the dog attacked his daughter and mother, the owner made no attempt to save them,” said Shankar, Sonia’s grandfather. “The dogs only left when locals came to the rescue.”
The police registered a case against Pugalendi, his wife Dhanalakshmi and their son Venkateswaran for charges under IPC sections 289 (animal kept by another person causing hurt by biting or doing any other act) and 336 (conduct/ endangering human life) punishable offenses. Police arrested three people and released them on their own recognizance.
Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner J Radhakrishnan said the Rottweiler will be taken to an animal shelter and kept there for observation.
In March 2024, the federal government banned the breeding, sale and import of 23 dog breeds, including Rottweilers, saying they posed a threat to human life. However, the implementation of the notification was put on hold by the Madras HC and withdrawn by several other HCs.
