GUWAHATI Unfortunate floods as well as landslides in the last 48 hours have left 13 dead in Assam, Meghalaya and Manipur, bringing the death toll to 17 due to rain related calamities that have occurred throughout the northeastern region since Wednesday.
Reports from official sources indicate that over six lakh people in the three states were affected.
Natural disasters struck Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura and West Bengal after Cyclone Remal; it was during this time that Prime Minister Narendra Modi took stock of the situation. Cyclone-induced storms resulted in more than 40 fatalities across Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland on May 28 following flash floods and landslides.
“My thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been affected… The Central Government has assured all possible support to the States and is continuously monitoring the situation. Officials are working on the ground to assist those affected,” Mr. Modi wrote on X.
Amit Shah spoke with Chief Ministers of northeastern states which were hit by natural calamity when he visited them pledging full government help for their populations as Home Minister of India. He also updated PM about developments.
“Our thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones and prayers are with the injured for speedy recovery. The situation is being closely monitored and authorities are providing all possible assistance to the affected,” he posted on X.
Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh took to micro-blogging site said: “Since we provided instant response towards flood victims’ relief work Fire service department personnel of Manipur has shown exceptional courage by discharging their duties promptly. Even today they are active in water distribution at different locations.”
Officials said floodwaters started receding from Imphal city besides rest of Imphal Valley across Manipur on Friday.
They added that over one hundred eighty eight thousand people were affected and some twenty four thousand houses were damaged due to floods.
Manipur’s Water Resources Minister Awangbow Newmai said three persons died and one was reported missing in the aftermath of the cyclone. “We have set up 56 relief camps for more than 18,000 people rescued by various agencies,” he said.
Southern Assam worst-hit
In contrast, Assam has been hit hard with a surge in cases leading to six fatalities including two women on Friday following the deaths of four people within the last two days.
The casualties took place in southern Assam’s Cachar (3) and Hailakandi (2) districts and central Assam’s West Karbi Anglong (1).
“More than 3.49 lakh people have been affected across 11 districts. The authorities concerned have set up 187 relief camps where 28,317 people have taken shelter,” an Assam State Disaster Management Authority spokesperson said.
Nagaon, Hojai are the most affected district after Cachar among eleven others in central Assam which experienced severe flooding that led to numerous deaths in those places.
Four persons died when a landslide occurred at Nongpriang village Sohra Meghalaya early Thursday morning. They were recovered on Thursday and Friday respectively.
