The death toll in Nepal‘s flash floods and landslides, triggered by heavy rains, has reached 14, and nine people are missing, according to the nation’s police.
“Police are working with other agencies and locals to find the missing people,” said Dan Bahadur Karki, a police spokesman, to AFP. The casualties and missing persons are scattered across various locations.
Every year, the monsoon rains from June to September bring widespread death and destruction across South Asia. However, in recent years, the number of fatal floods and landslides has increased significantly. Experts attribute this escalation to climate change and the increase in road construction.
Since Thursday, certain areas of Nepal have been experiencing heavy rainfall, prompting disaster authorities in the Himalayan nation to issue warnings about flash floods in multiple rivers. There have also been reports of flooding in several lowland districts bordering India.
Last month, ferocious storms in Nepal claimed the lives of 14 people, causing landslides, lightning strikes, and flooding.
In the northeastern Indian state of Assam, floods have inundated the region, resulting in the death of six people in the last 24 hours, according to the Assam Disaster Management Authority on Sunday. This brings the total death toll from the downpours since mid-May to 58, AFP reported.
In low-lying Bangladesh, located downstream from India, the disaster management agency reported that floods have affected more than two million people. A significant portion of the country consists of deltas where the Himalayan rivers, the Ganges and the Brahmaputra, wind towards the sea after traversing through India.
The summer monsoon brings 70-80 percent of the annual rainfall to South Asia.
