Two of the ship accidents on Monday in southern Italy killed 11 migrants and left 64 missing, according to an Africa charity which was cited by a German charity, Italian coast guard and UN agencies.
The German non-profit organization RESQSHIP that operates the Nadir rescue ship said it picked up 51 people from a sinking wooden boat with two people unconscious and discovered 10 bodies trapped inside its lower deck. “Our hearts go out to their families. We are so upset and angry,” it posted on X. On Monday morning, RESQSHIP said that survivors were transferred to the custody of Italian coast guards who took them ashore while Nadir proceeded to Lampedusa Island; however, attached to it was a corpse-laden wooden boat.
The UN Refugee agency UNHCR, the International Organization for Migration and UN children’s agency Unicef said these migrants who were intercepted by German volunteers came from Syria, Egypt, Pakistan as well as Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, another tragedy occurred when a boat that had been sailing for eight days since leaving Turkiye caught fire around 200 km east of Calabria in Italy and capsized on itself again claim UN agencies.
Another woman’s body along with 11 survivors were taken ashore at Roccella Ionica in Calabria as per medical sources familiar with the matter but some sixty four others went missing at sea. The second shipwrecked vessel carried immigrants from Iran as well as Iraq, Syria according to both organizations.
