Rain has intensified across Kerala triggered by a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert warning of extreme heavy rainfalls for three districts — Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Ernakulam — on Thursday (December 12, 2024).
An orange alert has also been issued for five districts — Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Thrissur — warning of very heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours. Districts such as Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad are put on yellow alert on Thursday and likely to receive isolated heavy rains.
Further, an orange alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Pathanamthitta on Friday, and a yellow alert for Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Idukki.
The low-pressure area that became well-marked on Thursday in the Gulf of Mannar and its neighbourhood is likely to move towards south Tamil Nadu. However, the system is unlikely to intensify into a depression. It is expected to weaken gradually during the next 12 hours, according to the weather bulletin issued at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
